FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's)

Q: Is an African safari safe?
A: Any hunting trip can be hazardous particularly when members of the Big Five are the quarry. However travel to and in Africa is relatively safe. The reputable outfitters I work with take all possible steps to ensure the safety of their clients.

Q: What are the best countries to hunt in?
A: Africa is large, and the quality/quantity of game varies by area. Certain countries have excellent hunting but tend to be very expensive - Tanzania and Botswanna. Others have certain species that can only be hunted there: South Africa - nyala, white rhino, black wildebeest; Namibia - Hartmann's zebra; Tanzania - east African antelope species, etc. In general, Zimbabwe offers the best value for dangerous game while Namibia offers the least expensive daily rate plains game hunts. South Africa has a tremendous diversity of game and terrain. As you can see, there is no "best" country - it depends.

Q: What weapon should I use?
A: Safaris are available for rifle, muzzleloader, archery and handgun enthusiast but not in each country. For most plains game, weapons suitable for elk will work fine. Each country has specific requirements for dangerous game, but the general minimum is 375 H&H.

Q: What are the extra fees?
A: Each country has its own pricing/fee system. Fees/taxes can significantly increase the cost of a safari, and you should ensure you have a complete listing as you compare cost. I will provide a complete, detailed list of all costs (minus airfare, tips, trophy dipping/packing/shipment) for each safari - there are no hidden cost.

Q: Can I do anything other than hunt?
A: This is your trip, and I encourage you to relax and enjoy it. Depending on the country and outfitter, numerous options are available. Side trips to national parks, wing-shooting, shopping, etc. can be easily scheduled for no or little extra cost. Excursions before or after the hunt can be arranged to relax/recover from jet lag; enjoy some sight-seeing; do some photography; fish; or whatever.

Q: What do I wear?
A: The seasons in southern Africa are reversed from ours; their winter is our summer. I provide a rather complete information package to all of my hunters that includes suggested clothing/items. Laundry is done daily so pack light.

Q: Are there snakes?
A: Most of the hunting is done in their winter and the snakes are not out. While there are snakes, you are not likely to encounter them even in the warmer months.

Q: When should I start my planning?
A: I recommend one year out although it can be done much quicker. You need to get your passport, shots if required, schedule flights, CITIES permits as needed, etc. I can and will do a lot for you but there are certain things that you have to do. One benefit of early planning is that with most of my outfitters, your deposit locks in the rates (daily rate/package not trophy fees) for the scheduled hunt (a 2010 hunt can be had at 2009 prices).
